Prison

On my last day in Sucre I was able to go to the prison with Len Tan another SIM missionary working in Sucre. Len on a weekly basis as part of his ministry will go into the prison to have bible studies with the inmates that ask for him. The prison was well manned but just didnt seem as secure as some of the prisons we see in Britain today. After being asked for my passport details and handing over my phone we went in.

The gaurd on the door was really friendly, I was later told that he is a Christian officer, which is great. I hope that he gets many chances to share the gospel with inmates. We went around the corner and came to this metal door that was wide open and didnt seem that secure. The guy that we were meeting was inside. I was a little aprehensive about meeting him because I didnt know what to expect. He was a really nice guy, maybe he had to be because he was being let out in less than a month. As we walked in, I noticed that the walls and ceiling were plastered with graffiti. He even had a tv!!! I think that he ran the prison drinks shop. During our study a couple of the guards would come in and buy drinks off him. I thought that was a bit strange but it gave him something to do I suppose. Len had this booklet that he was going through with him and the bit that he was on was about losing your salvation, it was interesting to hear his answers. At the start he was a bit unsure and was looking to us for confirmation of his answers. But after going through some of the passages of scripture that the booklet led us too. He was really sure that he could not lose his salvation. It was a real encouragement to see that. Hopefully when he gets out of prison he will still lead that christian life and that he will share with others that real saving grace that he has recieved.

Thankfully I got out alive and with my phone, it was a great place to visit, but not a place I would like to live. There was another block that is where all the hardened criminals are put together and it is supposed to be a pretty rough place. We didnt get to visit there but maybe next time.
